English/Nat Along with other parts of India's manufacturing and industrial sector, the country's beauty business is also going global. India's cosmetic market has got a new look with the entry of multi-national brands that promise world class grooming to a more beauty-conscious urban Indian. But the new entrants are facing stiff competition: from the popular herbal therapies that have ruled the beauty care market in the country for years. It is boom time for the consumer market in India. With the economy opening up for global competition, it is time for India's burgeoning middle class to fulfill its yearning for foreign products. One of the most visible faces of foreign investment in the country is the cosmetics industry. The last year has seen the entry of nearly all the major Western cosmetics giants into India - and many more are waiting for their ventures to be approved. At stake is a 340 (m) million U-S dollar market, which is growing at a rate of nearly 20 percent every year. The beauty business got a boost in 1994 when Indian women won the Miss Universe trial and the Miss World trial. No other country has bagged the top two beauty titles in the same year. While India celebrated its beautiful women, for the cosmetics multinationals, it was a chance to exploit the growing craze for looking good in the country. Most big Indian cities and towns are today flooded with brands that most middle-class women earlier saw only in glossy fashion magazines. But now - thanks to rising incomes - they are becoming more affordable. SOUNDBITE: (In English) "I prefer Revlon because it has more variety." SUPER CAPTION : RUBY, CONSUMER Sales figures are rising steadily as consumers enamored by the gloss flock to the counters. SOUNDBITE: ( In English) "They like very much because product is so good. And they find the price is very reasonable. And the colours are so good." SUPER CAPTION : Revlon Sales Girl Benckiser, the German cosmetic company is a major player in the cosmetics market. It is targetting the upper middle class as the barriers to business coming down fast. SOUNDBITE ( In English) "One of the reasons is that with excise duty coming down, there is in fact in real terms a price which is very attractive to the consumer. Secondly I think with increasing incomes as well as exposure to the west through satellite television and other things, there is a very large middle class which is now beginning to start consuming products. And I think that is another very big factor in opening this market up." SUPER CAPTION : D. Bhatnagar, Benckiser India Beauty consciousness may be a trait traditionally innate in Indian women, but few of them outside urban areas can afford to pamper themselves with western cosmetics. Per capita consumption of cosmetics in India is very low. While countries like Korea and Taiwan spend more than 30 U-S dollars per person on cosmetics, India uses less than a dollar . It is the natural-therapy based herbal beauty range that has dominated an average Indian woman's dressing table for years. Home-made therapies prescribed in the ancient Indian scriptures have been passed on for generations to feel and look beautiful. Enterprising business persons have capitalised on this appeal of these back to the nature beauty concoctions and are making handsome profits selling them as packaged products. One of the first to cash on this craze was Shahnaz Hussain , India's undisputed herbal beauty queen. Her vast empire is spread across London, New York and Paris and the clientele for her herbal mixes includes Princess of Wales and Barbara Cartland. For Shahnaz, the competition is causing no tension at all. The Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Project is a planned State-Sponsored Industrial Development Project of the Government of India. It is one of the world's biggest infrastructure projects with an estimated investment of US$90 billion, and is planned as a hi-tech industrial zone spread across seven states along the 1,500 km long Western Dedicated Freight Corridor which serves as its backbone. It includes 24 industrial regions, eight smart cities, two airports, five power projects, two mass rapid transit systems and two logistical hubs. India needs to employ over 100 million people within the next decade and so this project assumes vital importance to develop manufacturing centres that could employ millions. The ambitious Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) has received major boost with India and Japan inking an agreement to set up a project development fund. The initial size of the Fund will be ₹10 billion (US$148.6 million). Both the Japanese and Indian governments contribute equally. The work is already underway and progressing at a rapid pace, with the Dedicated Freight Corridor expected to be completed by 2017. This video is a repost of The Daily Conversation video. Enjoy
